South Beach Diet?

In talking with the dietician, she told me that once I have a surgery date set that I need to start eating either the Atkins plan or South Beach Diet, and that 2 weeks prior to surgery I will go on liquid protein for all but one meal (which would be protein/vege- low carb).  Question for all of you who are Dr. Jawad's patients, or anyone else who did a similar eating plan - would you suggest Atkins or South Beach?  I am leaning toward South Beach - but don't have the book or the plan (it's one of the few i haven't tried! heh).  Not sure though.  If you have the plan, can anyone email me privately what it entails? Thanks a lot!

Mary, Cannot help with either one of those, I was on Medifast before going to him and had all the stuff so I just got back on it.  I am doing slim fast now with one meal.  I do not feel like I have lost a pound but I am trying.  I am not going to let the scale beat me.  I even took the batteries out so I would not use it.  I feel better but do not think I have lost.  I think my body knows something is up and has shut down on me.  Good luck on which ever you use. I am 5 years out and I basically follow the South Beach Diet. It is basically the same as Atkins but you can have fruit and veggies. It is protien first then veggies then fruit. I stay with they lower end of gycemic index on fruits. (sugar Content) I have lost 155 pounds and am maintaining. Medifast is good too. A lot of the surgeons use the medifast program before they do the surgery to shrink the liver so they have a better field of vision when doing the surgery. Carla/Bradenton Florida 267 130 150

I use a lot of South Beach products...I am almost 3 years out and have maintained my lose of 255 pounds from my heaviest. I do like their products a lot and it is very easy to follow, from my personal experience..

Hi Mary, I would go with the South Beach diet.  I think it offers more variety.  I pretty much follow the plan: protein, then colored veggies and "if there is any room left" at all, a bite of fruit, usually a berry or melon.  You could probably find the book real cheap on Amazon or at a thrift shop.  I was not required to do a preop diet but I chose to start drinking protein shakes about 6 weeks before my surgery.  I really think the increased protein prior to surgery speeds up the healing process.  Best of luck. luvitsunnyv

I would go with South Beach, it does have more choices.. and I agree that the more protein helps with healing
